Distillation is a process used widely in the laboratory or in wider working environments for separating or purifying liquids or liquid mixtures based on the different boiling points of individual components.
Distillation Applications:
• Separation and purification of miscible liquid mixtures in organic chemistry
• Drying of solid residues and/or solvent removal
• Fractional distillation of liquids from polymers and petroleum products
• Removal of particulates or other solid contaminants
• As part of a water purification system for production of distilled water for laboratory use
• Specialist steam distillation-based applications such as Kjeldahl analysis of nitrogen and proteins in food, beverage, or environmental samples
What Types of Distillation Equipment Are Available?
Conventional distillation apparatus, typically comprising individual, jointed borosilicate glassware components assembled by the user (depending upon the application), using appropriate clamps, stands, and supports. Most conventional distillation assemblies combine a round-bottomed distilling flask to contain and heat the liquid(s) that require purification, fitted with a stoppered or jointed neck to which is attached a downward-sloping, inclined side-arm for connection to a condensing unit to cool the heated vapors back down to their liquid state. Heating mantles are the preferred heat source for improved temperature control. These conventional distillation units are also available supplied complete and ready-assembled for added convenience and ease of use.
Specialized automated distillation equipment, notably units designed for the determination of volatile acidity and alcoholic strength by volume in wines, musts, and alcoholic beverages, and units designed for Kjeldahl nitrogen or protein determinations.

Vacuum Trap BODY ONLY, Airfree, Schlenk, 57mm O-Ring Flange. Trap body is 57mm OD x 300mm in length to be used with a 4,300mL Dewar flask (CG-1593-05 or CG-1594-05). The seal between the trap stopper and body is made with a 57mm flat o-ring flange for total grease-free operation when used with either the AF-0060 or AF-0061 manifolds. Complete item consists of the trap stopper and body, one CG-139-02 horseshoe clamp, one #331 Viton o-ring and two #116 Viton o-rings.

Gas inlet tube is positioned in the distillation flask with an ACE 5028 adapter and secured with a #7 Ace-Thred. Thermometer joint is 10/30. Complete system consists of 500mL distillation flask, still body, cow receiver, gas inlet tube, threaded adapter, 3 250mL receiver flasks and a thermometer.

125mL Solvent Distillation Still Head, Airfree, Schlenk. Still head in 125mL capacity for use in re-purification of solvents under inert atmosphere. One-piece design of condenser and storage reservoir eliminates multiple connections usually associated with distillation setup. 0-4mm Chem-Vac™ Chem-Cap valves provide for grease-free, leakproof seals. Lower 3-way valve (C) allows for solvent return to flask, take-off or storage in graduated reservoir. Syringe access port (B) incorporates a 4mm PTFE stopcock with a 14/20 outer joint for use with CG-3022 septum stoppers permitting repeated syringe punctures or changes of the septum without breaching the integrity of the solvent. Valve (A) allows for isolation of the still from the inert gas source. Valve (D) permits evacuation and purging of the receiver flask. Uptake tube (F) is a 24/40 inner joint, while the takeoff connection (E) is a 14/20 inner joint. Design Suggested by Dr. Thomas Oberhauser.

Solvent Distillation Apparatus Complete, Airfree, Schlenk. Similar in design to AF0720 but without delivery adapter. Lower 3-way valve has been replaced with a single 0-4mm Chem-Vac™ Chem-Cap valve for draining distillate back into the flask. The uptake tube has one row of vigreux indentations, while the 14/20 top outer joint has been eliminated. Temperature can be measured by using a 2-neck flask with a thermocouple or thermometer adapter. The delivery tube has two 2mm PTFE straight bore stopcocks that can be operated in a way to purge the receiving vessel with inert gas. 2000mL reaction kettle complete with sublimation apparatus accessories. O-ring groove flange on kettle is supplied with a CAPFE o-ring and a quick release clamp. The 300mL condenser flask is connected to the condenser tube with a #25 Ace-Thred nylon bushing. The kettle head features a 34/45 center neck and (3) 24/40 side necks. PTFE sleeves are provided to prevent joint freeze. Also included are (2) 24/40 glass stoppers, and a 24/40 vacuum take-off stopcock adapter.
